Deep Diver

A young woman dreamt she jumped off a cliff into the sea. The next day, she did it for real. A dream like that lives in one mind only. It can be told, but not shown. During a residency, it was heard in words and given a body made of light.

A figure dives endlessly onto transparent fabric, projected cascading down a staircase. The projection doesn't hang in front of the building. It moves into the building. Each step becomes a ledge, the drop between steps becomes the fall, and the stairs turn into the cliff. A structure made for walking up and down now carries a leap. The architecture was already there; the light makes it part of the dream.

Light is what lets a private image reach a public space. Anyone passing the staircase walks into the dream without being told it is one. The story does not need words or explanation: it plays out on stone that everyone knows, at the scale of a body. Borrowing someone's dream is both homage and intrusion. The dream stays hers, but through the projection it becomes shared, and the building comes alive with a courage that was never its own. The dive never lands. It loops, the way a dream returns, as long as the light is on.
