APPROACHABLE ART

Group exhibition in Campo & Campo's renovated historic cinema hall, bringing together more than seventy established and emerging artists and over 300 works.

I presented five works from two bodies of work. From BB (Bunny Behavior), a series examining the gray area between losing the innocence of childhood and not yet fully finding oneself as an adult, MOE and THE BLACK SHEEP reflect the move from village life into the city. MOE starts from a familiar rural symbol, the cow, and strips away its defining features. Made from jute, the material of potato sacks and rural labour, it carries the village into a new context. "MOE" is both the Dutch sound of a cow and the Dutch word for "tired." THE BLACK SHEEP, a headless sheep lying on its back, is a body still moving but no longer at ease: the outsider entering a new environment.

STRAIN takes the shape of an enlarged liver. Removed from its biological function, it hovers between recognition and alienation, clearly lifeless yet carrying traces of something once vital.

From Is It My Story to Tell?, the paintings ROADKILL and VOMITINA let a familiar narrative take shape in the viewer's mind, animating the inanimate into something familiar yet uncanny.
